Veterans and Prison Leavers

Veterans

We are proud to partner with local and national military veterans’ charities and organisations, delivering dedicated advice and support services for disabled veterans. Our shared mission is to strengthen mental health, enhance well‑being, and improve outcomes for ex‑uniformed personnel, their families, and the wider community.

According to the Health and Wellbeing of UK Armed Forces Veterans: Veterans’ Survey 2022, UK

that was published 4 December 2024, "just under half (48.7%) of veterans were disabled (a much higher proportion than identified in Census 2021 or that we expect among the actual UK veteran population) and just under a third of veterans across the UK said they felt lonely always, often or some of the time (31.3%).

Loneliness and disability status were associated and, among disabled veterans, 39.4% felt lonely always, often or some of the time, compared with 22.9% of veterans who were not disabled."

DAS team member Malcolm is a trained Armed Service Network Service Champion - we offer advice to all armed service veterans with hidden or visible disabilities.

Prison Leavers

We are a registered supplier to the Ministry of Justice Probation Service and can provide advice to the high proportion of prison leavers that exit custody with disabilities.

According to the Prison Reform Trust Factfile of February 2025, 36% of all prisoners are estimated to have a medical or mental disability, compared to 19% of the general population: 11% have a physical disability; 18% have a mental disability; 8% have both.

All prisoner leavers that settle in Suffolk can access disability advice through DAS.
